The knobblies are called 'pearls' but I'm not sure what purpose they have. They count for up to four points in the CIC scoring system for antler quality. I would say this is likely to be from an animal at least three years old, though probably not much more. As for eating them, I think it's just a question of recycling scarce nutrients.
