Sorry didn't see this post before I said words on your other, my words may be out of context then.

Depending on how well you get on with your uncle, perhaps he can lend it to you for a couple of weeks to see if you can get on with it.

Good luck with your BA - I've recently completed a non-specialist photography BA at Leeds met - I couldn't get across to liverpool to do that one.

For photos in general, quality is the be all and end all and that comes from the glass. While i haven't seen results from a 'bigma' the 50-500 screams compromise to me. But of course you have to cut your cloth to meet your budget. It might be a great 'keep-on' lens but could an image taken at say 300mm with the bigma stand next to a pic from a canon 300m f4? I don't know. (I don't mean a browser image but a proper print - which I guess all your assignments will be based on.)
