Although born in Rochdale, he was brought up by his father in Birmingham as his mother was sectioned in a Psychiatric Hospital.
He attended King Edwards school in Birmingham and then studied at Cambridge where he appeared in Footlight productions.
Married to Laura Beaumont and have a daughter Rosie. He also has another two daughters from a previous marriage to Jean Hart. He also has one grandchild, Lyle.
Was awarded an OBE in 1963 for services to wildlife conservation.
