The tight sods. In my early twenties I used to volunteer for the National Trust and I thought them fairly generous. You got a (little) bit of travelling expenses to the site, free admission to properties, estates and car-parks etc and every now and then a few free t-shirts and sweatshirts were lobbed at us. However, I was told pay was pretty poor for rangers and the like.
It was over 15 years ago now and I have no idea if they still do such stuff.
