Re: Swordfish washed up in Wales

It is actually not that surprising and probably little to do with global warming. Swordfish undertake huge migrations and range annually up as far as the western coast of Norway. Stragglers have always appeared from time to time on various UK coasts. Of course they do so in lesser numbers than they used to because of the massive over-fishing in the Atlantic.
I was priveledged to see one once when diving in the Red Sea and it was a fantastic sight. Few people are so lucky and it really sickens me to see swordfish on the menu in restaurants - they are an apex predator, the fastest fish in the sea and under serious pressure with the average size of caught specimens declining year on year - and we know where that leads. Doesn't seem to bother Joe Public much because it very much the out of sight, out of mind syndrome. Imagine what an outcry there would be if your local pub started selling the terrestrial equivalent cheetah and chips!
