I have a vague memory of it being around when I was a child (not sure what for) but don't recall any smell. Did it come in a small brown bottle, with a rubber dispenser on the top? or is that something totally different?

It's the smell of hospital wards / corridors (as in the in olden days, when I were a mere youth starting out as an NHS Pathologist).
The smell that let you know that you were NOT going to get infected with the 'superbug' MRSA just by entering the hospital, as seems to be the case nowadays !
