Re: Moth Trapping Tips Please

Hi Fence.

Im a relative newbie to moth trapping myself and had/have exactly the same problem although im using a robinson trap.

I think it comes down to having the 'knack' and a technique which will come with practice...

I trap all night...dusk to dawn (9pm to 5am at the moment or there abouts)

I have the light set on a timer....then whomever is up first (normally my mother) we lighty bung up the holes around the lamp with a rag or some such to stop any clever ones escaping...

The trap is then put somewhere cool and in the shade....i tend to unpack and record in my garage which has windows...first thing i did was de web the whole place (sorry spider lovers) as escapees become food in a flash...or at least paralysed.

The pain in the bum species for me are mostly....Mother of Pearl (micro) and Riband Wave....neither of which seem to settle down over night and go to sleep and these buzz and fly around the trap and shoot out as soon as you open it...(i only remove the lamp section and funnel leaving the plastic lid in place and kind of reach in with my tubs and pots ...

Once i have chased the mother of pearls and riband waves all over the garage and trapped them against to window glass i go to work on the rest.

A lot can be potted by finding them on the inside wall of the trap and sliding the pot over them and the lid under them....once i have gathered all those and all the tiny micros i carefully lift out an egg box one at a time which usually has larger but more sleepy moths within which are encouraged into my pots using a soft paintbrush and any escapees fly to the light of the windown and are caught...i then catch any that were under the egg box but still in the trap before moving to the next eggbox...

Trust me on my first session i had lots of escapees and runaways....today i only lost 1 single moth into my grans shed (my second site) but i saw it was a chinese water mark before it legged it back to bejing!

Just persevere...remember not to leave the moths/trap in the sun where they get lively...or too hot and could die....

and just do everything gently and slowly and you will find a way of reducing the escapees...

and just pray you dont have as many riband waves or mother of pearls as i do!

here are two links that might be of use?:

http://www.angleps.com/moth_guid.pdf

they look the same but the second is larger more in depth...

good luck
