You should be able to crop your pictures by using the first tool in the toolbox (click on
Tools and then
Toolbox if you can't see it) it looks like a grey square.
drag around the part of the photo you want to keep and then click on
Image and then
Crop
You can then click on
File and
Save as to change the filename and save it as a different picture (thus not ruining your original picture)
