With the badgers, I think that Plaid Cymru thought it would be a rural vote winner in Wales. They "whipped" their AMs to vote pro-cull. Generally the farmers most obsessed by getting rid of badgers seem to be those keenest on fox hunting - eg Countryside Alliance types. Fewer foxes about (all gone to gardens where nice people feed them) well get rid of badgers next. The obvious argument, that a cull won't work, would at the very best cause a minor benefit, and is going to cause massive trouble (yes, it will in the area chosen who is going to want to live in it for years of this horror) falls on deaf ears.
