Clear spring water must always have been regarded as a great boon Especially in land on the chalk or limestone where there are fewer streams &c.
There's an interesting couple of wells in Eyam which sits astride the limestone and the acid sandstone: although directly next to each other, one gives very hard water, one very soft ....
