I've recently re-read 'The Cottage Book' and 'The Charm of Birds', by the long gone former Liberal Home Secretary, Sir Edward Grey. Both are good, but 'The Charm of Birds' is perhaps the best insight into British birdsong I have ever come across. Written in 1927, I consider it to be the definitive book on the subject and has therefore not been bettered.
