aye, the 40D is just out as is the 450D. The '6D' rumours have been about for aaaaages, so we'll just see what happens there! There's a fairly regular schedule of updates across the ranges with canon. No point in being impatient - they'll be out when they're done
I don't see the point in the spec of the 1000D (seems like an odd mix of the 400 and 450Ds) but the price seems to fill the void left by the 450D's higher price in the beginners market.
