Digital compact depth of field advice

I have a Canon Digital Ixus 400 camera. I am very happy with it overall. However, my main hobby is photographing various insects. Many of the photos I take are slightly out of focus in the subject but only a few milimetres closer or further away the photo is as sharp as could be. I did not have this problem with my 35mm SLR as I was able to adjust the aperature to create a margin of error in the depth of field. The digital has a macro setting but it does not really help.
Anyone got any ideas (other than buy a digital SLR) as Its very frustrating missing so many pictures

Richard
