Blue tit attacks nest

Hi all.
My name is John and my wifes name is Chris, we both love to watch the different birds that visit our garden, we feed and water them often.
About two years ago i built two boxes and placed them in the trees at the bottom of our garden, this year for the first time blue tits nested in one of them, we enjoyed watching them everyday until one day last week we noticed one blue tit struggling with something inside the opening, it finally got it through the hole and flew to a near branch with it, we watched through binoculars and realised it was a chick, it proceeded to tug at it and pull it to bits before flying off, since this episode a blue tit has approached the outside of the box and flew off, they have not been back and it now looks like it is abandoned.
Does anyone know why and is this usual.
regards
John
