All the wood was recovered from an old pine bed that we replaced with a divan a couple of years ago. Even the screws were re-used. The only thing in the construction that hadn't been used before was the wood glue which I used mainly to ensure that all joints are weather proof.

The only thing I haven't done yet is the ventilation but I have some off-cuts of 3/4" plastic overflow pipe in my garage which will do the job.

The web site says not to treat the wood but it'll be lucky to last a year if I don't. I'm very tempted to use a water based, pet-friendly preservative on the outside. I've used this on bird boxes and the birds have been fine. Does anyone have any advice to offer on this? Are hedgehogs likely to gnaw on the wood?
