Thanks for responses. The picture was taken last Sunday next to a walkway (former railway) I would say at least half a mile from any dwelling. Its in an area where I have found and eaten wild strawberries in the past but I assumed it would be to early for that to flower. The plant was on the raised shoulder of the walkway which is dry. south facing and not what I would describe as good soil. If it remains a puzzle I would happily return to get more images. In that case any advice on what I might look for would be appreciated.
