8 miles is decent, how often ? I mean like once a week, twice etc. I try for 2 mile every morning with 5 at least once a week (tho is been too blinking hot of late). Also where are you running, trackwork is useful as is gras but it aint a real preparation for hard surface road races. Also running on your own isnt the same as running in a big bunch like in a marathon so you ought to look at doing some shorter races for the experience before tackling a big boy.
I'm getting back into propper training too, so If we do want to marathon for WAB I'm really up for it (in fact I've decided that I'll do it regardless of whether anyone else do) - I'm going to enter a thirteen in the autumn (havent decided which one yet) which will give me a decent waypoint to aim at -you might want to do something similar.
