It's up to you but you definitely WON'T be disappointed with the Canon! (Unless you get a hankering for the newly released 450d of course
) It's a great camera. Don't know much about the Pentax, but the 400d gets consistently fantastic reviews. Loads of people on here use it and with the right lens produce amazing images. Def a good choice for a first DSLR.
