I can't recall hearing this quite so early in the year before and until this morning it's usually been a solitary Robin - has anyone else experienced this?

Yes certainly have Jeff. I often finish work at 5:30am in the morning. On Tuesday morning as I walked to the car park at work, which is surrounded by large bushes and well lit I definitely heard a Robin, Song Thrush, Wren and Dunnock as well as several other bits and pieces of song. I was most surprised as it was obviously still dark. However I often hear a Song Thrush in one of the conifers at work singing in the middle of the night in summer. again it's a very well lit spot.
