| Re: lambs.. I have always worked with the dates of, tupped firework night, lamb on April fools day. Sheep are in most breeds seasonal breeders, in that the ewe won't come into season till The Right Time, but some breeds are less fussy (Common quoted one was Dorset Horn), and the great thing about the sheep industry was that it was all based on the right time, fairly low inputs, but things like Easter lamb prices, intensive rearing and hormonal control of Oestrus waved their seductive robes across the sensible ways of the past, and now you can have baa-lambs anytime you want, but outside at this time of year sounds like what was known as a freak of nature, e.g. a hole in the fence when you thought the tup had finished and you had taken him out for a celibate winter by himself. |
