I am running with CS3 at present but I have used CS2 and Elements previously. You are absolutely right in saying that Elements is all you would need as a hobbyist or even semi-professional. It is a great program to use and compared to CS3 it is a lot easier. It has everything you need and more. I was lucky and had the opportunity to upgrade for very little cash so I took the upgrade. It has taken me around a year to learn CS3 and although I still am not there, it is a fantastice progam. I also use Lightroom and that is superb too, especially if you shoot in RAW.
