Re: Hello from StuartDH Hi all,
I just joined 'cause I was given a little field guide called "Food for Free" as a stocking filler for Christmas but it has quickly become my favourite prezzie. I never knew there was so much variety of edible plants and that several of the plants I always thought of as just weeds were actually edible, like Dandilions and Nettles.
The problem I have though is that I don't have enough confidence to identify plants can anyone tell me a good way to get started? Are there any books you would recommend? Courses? Web sites? etc...
I do know enough to realise that some wild flowers and fungi are poisonous and even the edible ones may have been sprayed with herbicide or pesticide and that some poisonous plants look remarkably similar to plants that the field guide says are edible. I also know that some wild plants are protected and that it is illegal to pick them, so I'm not just going to go wondering around my local park picking plants and eating them. I would however be interested in learning more about how to get started.
Many thanks |
