As well as Matts comments, one point to make clear, we've never deleted the images when they've been asked to be moved for the reason Matt gave, disturbing forum threads.
The main reason it's now more awkward than before is the new system uses a different database, the two can't see each other so we can't simply select a different gallery as we used to do before the upgrade.
That's why it's so awkward to copy them over. It's a three window job at best, and takes far longer to do. In effect we have to re-load them, hence we came to the conclusion the user is in a much better position to do that. There's always the danger we may use the wrong user name, something I did only yesterday.
