one of those things, sometimes you are unaware of what 'clues' your brain uses to identify a bird. I remember seeing a flock of widgeon flying at some distance low over the sea on a sunny day - this is a bird I have seen lots of but still I totally didn't recognise them and if it wasn't for the chap who was stood next to me I wouldn't have guessed! I realise now it was because of the light, it was so bright and the contrast so strong I could see none of the pink, russets and cinnamon browns that I associate with this species and I had to learn to look for the white on the wing of the males.
Thats what I love about birds you're constantly learning new things with them!
