See to me L is shorthand for Lapwing (well L. if you want to be precise). and 70-200 means you're rubbish at counting them and F4 well that's something to do with genetics and cross breeding....

As Andy has stated 'L' is canons pro range of 'glass' (lenses), the 70-200 bit is the focal range, 70mm-200mm is a zoom lens and if someone quoted just a single number then it means the lens is fixed at that range.
The f4 bit is the lenses minimum aperture (how much light it lets in) the smaller that number the 'faster' the lens...... god i wish I never started now would you like me to go on?
