I love the smell of: Gorse; fresh-cut grass; Tomato plants (in moderation); mudflats/seashore at low tide.

I hate the smell of: air "fresheners"; petrol fumes; our local sewage works - when the wind is in the northeast, a plume of noxious emanations spreads across the river into my bedroom window, so pungent you can almost see it.

That could be Skunk Cabbage, an appropriately named North American waterside plant sometimes grown in large gardens, yellow flowers smell strongly of Fox in spring.
