That's an understandable comment given that it's what the celebrity obsessed media keep telling us, and I'm sure that there are some people for whom it's true. But I wonder how many.

I recently heard someone being interviewed say something along the lines of "We are all obsessed by celebrities - we all buy "Heat" magazine..." and my immediate response was "Well I don't!" So I looked into it a bit further and discovered that for July to December 2006 (the latest period for which data was available at the time) Heat's circulation, measured by ABC (the Audit Bureau of Circulation) peaked at 598,623. That's a fraction under 1% of the UK population. Even allowing for the fact that many copies will be shared around I'm willing to bet that well over 90% of people in Britain never open a copy of Heat or any other "celebrity" mag.
