I was going to say 1. Keep all their previous links to keep the work down for the mods but after reading your second post I would say take the pragmatic approach - leave them wherever possible but if WAB is haemorrhaging visitors through them and losing money then either remove them or ask for referral fees.

2. Insist on a link back from the external site
And if it's easy and painless to monitor the through traffic to that link then consider asking for referal fees when traffic crosses a certain threshold, i.e 100 per day.
