Indubitably if we were having to pay for processing &c then we'd take a lot fewer pictures.
I quite often shoot and worry about the fine details later - especially of an insect that is likely to fly away any second - my attitude is get something, anything, then worry about the finer points! Particularly I will try to get a fairly low magnification picture before getting closer to the animal with the likelihood of scaring it off.
Mind, this is such an ingrained habit that I do it with plants
