I remember when I was planning my first trip with my partner to the Scottish Highlands she asked whether she would need a passport and a different currency .... and whether there would be mains electricity and water supplies

I had a much more informed view of Scotland having had many previous trips although even on my first trip approaching the far north west tip of the mainland it did seem like the edge of the world.

For such a small nation Scotland has given so much to the world .... and not just malt whisky
