I don't really know about birds but you've been given some leads there. Not all that far from Hatfield/Thorne Moors.
Closer to Doncaster proper, the Don valley by Conisbrough (that doesn't look like the correct spelling) is interesting for plants (cuts into the Magnesian) and therefore for insects. Lots of walks from Conisbrough station along the valley and up to the moors ...

On that front, a few good places you'll be within an easy hours drive, Clumber Park is an obvious one, it's National trust property, with enormous grounds. Thorsby Park, which is close to Clumber is also a good one, excellent open park lands worth a visit at any time, especially when the Swallows arrive. They nest very close to the cafe in an open courtyard for all to see.
