For what you'd get for it I'd keep it. Put it in a box and forget about it, and like you said make it an heirloom. A beautiful present from Gramps to grandson and keep some photos taken with it. A bit of history and a good way to educate them.
I fondly remember sharing a pipe with my Grandad. I'll remember it for the rest of my life. I lived in North Yorks at the time so must have been somewhere between 7 and 9. Fantastic.
