I think it is some kind of essential oil contained within the seed which has to be extracted, so I don't suppose the spiders will be too bothered unless it's in a high enough concentration.

As for having a good aim...I was under a spreading chestnut tree on Sunday and a grey squirrel was lobbing them in my general direction At least the spiky husks haven't developed yet!
