I don't know if this helps - I'm a member of a local group here in Reading, and sometimes have to write similar reports and articles.

If you're using Microsoft Word, then simply click on "Insert" on the toolbar, then click on "symbols". As I tend to use "Arial" typeface, I keep the font as this and then scroll to "Miscellaneous Dingbats" in the subset. You'll find the male and female symbols about three quarters of the way down.

I think they're also in other fonts as well, but can be accessed the same way.
