For the last couple of years, my wildlife wish has been to see a Red Kite flying over my home village!
I've seen lots of these magnificent and charming birds before (yes, I know, you can just drive down the M40 past Stokenchurch to see them!), but they were re-introduced in the south-western end of the Chilterns whereas I live in the north-eastern end. They are gradually coming this way - I've seen them nearer and nearer to my home over the last couple of years - in fact I've now seen kites a couple of times further east than where I live.
I've done quite a bit of walking in the Bucks/Oxon part of the Chilterns, and frequently had Red Kites flying low overhead - I didn't need binoculars to get some great views of them. They don't seem upset by human presence, and are regularly seen in the centre of places such as Watlington, Chinnor and Princes Risborough. I would just love to have them flying overhead here in Kensworth.
I recently saw one just a mile away at Whipsnade, and two of my near neighbours have seen them from their gardens, so I guess I shouldn't have too long to wait now! |
