Yes it's a jolly good idea.
It can be done on the movie section of a camera, you don't need to even make a movie of the bird so long as the sound is there just turn on movie fore a minute, you can then extract the sound from the movie file and delete the file keeping the sound convert it to MP3 and there you have it
