Garden Spider - Araneus diadematus maybe?

It looks like one of the orb-weaver family. There are a few very similar they vary a littl but in common a garden spider.
Having said all that I could be wrong
I have a nice little book on spiders as my son is an archninphobic and so we have to look up every spider we see
