Hi, some fonts, mostly unicode or opentype ones, do actually have these lurking in the alt/shift characters.

The easiest way is to load a symbol font and then just select that font to get the symbols.
This truetype one has male/female signs at "M" & "F" as well as some other useful ones:

PC version

Mac version

I've not tried the PC one, but the Mac version works fine on my laptop.
