That was the guidance for quite some time, three or four to a tree all facing different aspect, bats are very sensitive to changes in humidity and temperature I guess its thought that providing lots of choice in one spot was the best solution.
I have found though that three schwegler bat boxes to a tree is a bit much unless you have a very big tree!!
