Well done - you bit the bullet and did the right thing. Gravel and stones are fine - if you put pots of plants in the margins I think you're supposed to cover the compost surface with a good depth of gravel - to minimise leaching of nutrients.

Good luck - apparently a new pond will be colonised by at least one flying beetle within 24 hours - or so I heard on radio 4 the other day.
