Join zoologist Nigel Marven and his crew as they shrink to the size of a human fingernail to explore the humble back garden
Dodging lethal raindrops, tiptoeing around a gigantic toad’s flicking tongue and riding on the tail of an oversized dragonfly are all in a day’s work for intrepid zoologist, Nigel Marven and his team.
Follow Nigel and his crew, Laura and Doug, as they shrink themselves to explore the jungle that’s just outside their door: the back garden. From the pond to the patio, Nigel leads a daring adventure that allows him to enjoy life like a bug and even sample a bit of greenfly aphid bug excrement that tastes just like sugar.
Shrinking to the size of a human fingernail is no easy feat for Nigel and his squad. Weighing less than a pea, the team is in constant danger of becoming dinner for larger animals like wasps or the dreaded Devil’s Coach Horse beetles. Even a seemingly innocent millipede can prove a formidable foe to a micro-sized Nigel because of its ability to squirt cyanide. Being this tiny, the team members must also monitor their heart rates, eating patterns and temperature very closely or risk hypothermia and heart attack.
However, there are some bonuses to being micro-sized. At a mere 1.27 centimetres tall, a person’s muscles are 150 times stronger than normal. This enables Nigel to scale a rock that is the equivalent of climbing the Eiffel Tower. He will need this super strength and his remarkably fast reflexes to protect himself from predators like the dragonfly, which can strike its prey at lightning speed – 12 times faster than a human blink.
Throughout their quest, the team experiences some very close encounters. Wood ants use their vibration detection skills and special communication chemicals to set their sights on Nigel’s team-mates. Meanwhile, Nigel narrowly escapes from the “Valley of the Spiders”, agilely bypassing the spiders’ deadly silken snares. When Nigel comes directly in the path of a shrew and its highly-sensitive sonar, he is rescued by an unlikely ally. However, the team will face their biggest challenge yet if they do not return to their normal size in time.
