The RAW files often have jpeg content stored "embedded" to enable thumbnail viewing in windows etc. I have been told by a very reliable software delevoper that it is this jpeg file that the Microsoft Viewer displays when reviewing Nikon NEF's.
I tested this recently by using a RAW batch editor to remap a stuck pixel on all the files in a folder (166) the Microsoft Viewer still showed the hot spot but it was invisible in Adobe, Bibble and CaptureOne.
Canon's RAW may be different in this regard. |
