by disabling email notification you wont get emails on any new posts you subscribe to / take part in once you have changed your prefference - to avoid getting them from those you have already taken part in you need to unsubscribe from them in the members control panel
as to reasons to disable it the two good ones i can think of are a) if you used someone elses email, or a work email to sign up , and b)if you are very active and get buried in notifications - mine is disabled forthe latter reason , tho i have left pm notification active.
