Favourite because it's odd, coming up from the corms before the leaves, and because we don't see it every year, as the flowers are also a favourite of the muntjac. Luckily we've only lost a couple this year. The big rhubarb-like leaves offer good shelter for the pond wildlife and are a great source of winter bugs as they decay. And of nesting material for the blackbirds if I don't clear them promptly in the spring.  |
That is very pretty. I have never seen one before. Does it grow in the water or just near the pond? If it is in the water, I would risk trying one - I don't think the deer like to get their feet wet!
