I've only rarely found moths sitting on tree trunks during the day, but the few I have seen have always been on the shady side of the tree. Very few moths will sit still for long in bright sunshine.
Most nocturnal moths spend the day well hidden from predators, which is why they're so difficult to find. If we can see them, so can the birds!
