A cheap way of protecting the bulb from rain etc is if you have one of those cheap shops near to you (Pound land) from time to time they sell Cafetieres (Coffee jug with a plunger), remove the handle and just use the clear glass jug part.
I have seen this done a couple of times.
I must admit if it looks like rain I open up the garage door and stick the moth trap just inside the garage. The upended door stops the rain from coming in and I still get to trap moths.

I think I will have to eventually look to protect the bulb though but at the moment I will be away every weekend from now until after May 17th so haven't got a chance of getting near any shops.
