Kayleigh. I'm going through the same thoughts as you at the moment. Living in North Kent is just as awful. We had to watch hundreds of metres of hedges and ancient trees being removed just because they want to move a motorway about 50 metres south!! It's horribly upsetting and I do feel for you.
The only thing to keep yourself uplifted with is the fact that there are lots of us around(including all those here on WAB) who really do care about the environment and have the enthusiasm and commitment to wildlife which will eventually get through to the planners and councils.
Lets face it, through retirements and better education, one day there may be people who plan with wildlife corridors in mind, houses that collect their own water supply, etc.
I think the key is to arouse folks interest in their own immediate environment. Some folk may not even be aware that there's a SSSI on their doorstep.
I do, for instance, see much more reptile mitigation fencing being used before a project gets going. I never saw this before, they'd just come in with the diggers and wipe out a whole habitat. So someone somewhere must be getting the message.
In the meantime, keep up your interest in wildlife and set others alight with your enthusiasm for it...it does pay off.
