Description

They have grey brown fur, small eyes and ears with a short tail and have pale grey underparts.

Footprint Description

Classic "star" shape typical of Vole prints. Fore foot has 4 digital pads, and 3 interdigital pads. Hind foot has 5 digital pads, with 4 interdigital pads. Very short claws sometimes apparent. "Hand" outline common where tracks are found in soft ground.

Distribution

Widely distributed throughout the British mainland but are absent from Ireland and some islands.

Footprint Size

fore foot - 1.2x1.5cm, hind foot - 1.5x1.8cm. Stride roughly 5-6cm.

Habitat

Grassland, meadows and marshland.

Reproduction

The breeding season is from March until October, females producing 4 - 6 young following an 18-20 day gestation period.

Field Voles use regular latrines along main runs/tunnelsĀ  through thick grass/undergrowth.

Droppings are a distinct green colour when fresh, and oval in cross section. Size around 0.4cm diameter,length approx 0.8cm.

Status

Common and widespread and not considered to be in danger.
