Field Vole

Description

They have grey brown fur, small eyes and ears with a short tail and have pale grey underparts.

Distribution

Widely distributed throughout the British mainland but are absent from Ireland and some islands.

Habitat

Grassland, meadows and marshland.

Predators

Birds of prey, foxes, cats and members of the weasel family.

Reproduction

The breeding season is from March until October, females producing 4 - 6 young following an 18-20 day gestation period.

Status

Common and widespread and not considered to be in danger.

Footprint Description

Classic "star" shape typical of Vole prints. Fore foot has 4 digital pads, and 3 interdigital pads. Hind foot has 5 digital pads, with 4 interdigital pads. Very short claws sometimes apparent. "Hand" outline common where tracks are found in soft ground.

Footprint Size

fore foot - 1.2x1.5cm, hind foot - 1.5x1.8cm. Stride roughly 5-6cm.
