Frequently Asked Questions - Wild About Britain

We've recently set up an account everyone to be able to sell items on eBay and donate a percentage of the selling price to Wild About Britain at the same time.

The system is operated by MissionFish and you can find Wild About Britain's dedicated page by clicking here

It's a great way of selling any of your old items and it's a great way of donating to Wild About Britain, so please help out wherever you can.

A Great British Wildlife Charity

Wild About Britain is a registered charity (No. 1104184) that serves to promote wildlife, the natural environment and the great outdoors from every corner of the British Isles. In order to continue providing this free service we desperately need your support.

www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk

The Wild About Britain website is an online community that enables people to work together on wildlife and environment projects across the UK. The website enable members to share ideas, knowledge and resources through the forums, gallery and newspaper on subjects from birds, insects, mammals and trees to wildflowers, marine life, astronomy and the weather. In order to maintain and develop the website and meet the increasing costs of servers, developers and software we need urgent funding and support.

Your contributions will help us to maintain the existing website and further develop new features from online mapping and interactive videos, to puzzles, games and resources for schools.

From Little Acorns...

Wild About Britain continues to grow from strength to strength and we are already developing significant new additions to the website that will add great new features and facilties for the public to learn more about their natural environment.

More than just a website

Wild About Britain is an online community with over 40,000 members. However, we aim to develop many new projects that will see the charity promoting British wildlife and the environment through a wide range of media to reach every demographic throughout the UK. With your help we aim to develop awareness through television and radio, newspapers, events and presentations and exhibitions across the British Isles.

Great Value for Money

Wild About Britain was short-listed as just one of three finalists for the British Environment and Media Awards 2006 - standing alongside some of the most distinguished international environment groups, newspapers and broadcasters in the UK. With a budget of less than 0.1% of some of the above organisations, the charity continues to show that it is able to punch well above its weight and is great value for money.

All funds are currently used to develop this website and cover the cost of dedicated servers, software and techinical support. This enables us to serve approximately 3 million unique visitors a year.

Gift Aid Donations

Did you know that if you are a tax payer, Wild About Britain can claim an extra 28p from the taxman, for every pound that you donate to the charity?

Wild About Britain started life in 2003 when the founding trustees noticed that, during the past couple of decades, successive generations of young people were becoming less knowledgeable of our natural environment.

Throughout the 80s and 90s, British wildlife continually lost public interest to many high-energy, mass-marketed and technology-driven past times. Where interest in wildlife and nature still remained, much of it was directed towards the seemingly more glamorous aspects of worldwide nature, rather than UK species.

Early research showed that today's children are more familiar with species of the African national parks, Arctic tundra, Amazonian rainforests and tropical oceans, than the nature that can be found in their own back garden, local parks and woodlands. Moreover, whilst some children and young adults were aware of national wildlife organisations that cater for specific interest groups, few had any knowledge of local environment issues or the facilities that were available to them on a local level.

In direct response to the above problem, and with the help of family and friends, Stuart Diston-Hunter started the Wild About Britain project and launched the website in the autumn of 2004. Since then, Wild About Britain has helped to promote the invaluable work of the UK's small local wildlife groups, provide information and resources on a wide variety of environmental topics, and helped to raise awareness of the incredible nature than can found throughout the British Isles.

To date, Wild About Britain has published thousands of news stories on every aspect of British wildlife from every corner of the UK. We regularly promote hundreds of events each month and our online gallery now displays thousands of wildlife photographs, the vast majority of which have been taken by visitors to the web site.

With an invaluable team of volunteers from across the British Isles, wildaboutbritain.co.uk now contains more than 250,000 pages on British wildlife and has become one of the leading online resources to information on the UK's natural environment.
