This is one of the largest and most common of the Earthstars and can be found in deciduous woods, hedgerows and sand dunes. The young fruitbody is onion-shaped and has a distinct point at the top. At maturity, the outer woody surface splits and opens into a star shape, revealing the puffball-like inner part that contains the spores. There is a distinct collar around the ball, which gives it it's common name.
